Be Salt Savvy


Scottish Slimmers eating plans allow you to eat the real, nutritious food you love and feel the best you can. This includes being aware of what goes into your food. A common ingredient in food is salt but too much can be hazardous to your health. It can raise your blood pressure, put a strain on your major organs and can lead to serious complications, such as a heart attack or stroke.
 
Being salt savvy can be easier at home where you can omit it from dishes you are cooking and making sure you make low sodium choices... but what about when you’re out and about? It can be difficult to keep track of the salt content of your food when you are on holiday or out for a meal.
 
There are hidden salts in some of your favourite dishes that you wouldn’t think twice about ordering, so swot up on salt and check out our guide to dining out and lowering your daily intake:
 
Italian: choose vegetable-based pizza toppings and avoid asking for extra cheese. If you are a pasta lover, choose tomato-based sauces as opposed to bacon or cheese.
 
Indian: opt for plain rice as it is lower in salt than pilau or egg fried rice.
 
American: avoid burger toppings that can be high in salt like bacon, cheese and barbecue sauce.
 
British: instead of a full English breakfast, go for a poached egg on toast with mushrooms and grilled tomatoes.
 
Mediterranean: ask for your salad dressing on the side so you don't over indulge without meaning to. Dressings can be high in salt and fat so be aware.
