How to avoid weight gain over Christmas


Regardless of how well you eat throughout the year, Christmas is a time for family, friends and fun. This can often mean we indulge a bit more than we should and as a result, the scales show a higher number come January. 
 
Christmas is for relaxing, enjoying yourself, the food and family around you. You can afford to give yourself some leeway with your eating however there are some ways you can cut the fat and calories of your festive food, meaning you could maintain your weight over the festivities. 
 
Here's how to eat and enjoy your pigs in blankets and Christmas pudding without gaining an extra layer. 
 
Eat breakfast:
 
Start your day with a nutritious breakfast to fill you up and prevent you from snacking later in the day.
 
Schedule in activity:
 
Your calendar will start filling up with work Christmas lunches, family events and more, making it less likely you will go to the gym or keep up your activity. 
However, if you've got time to schedule in parties, you've got time to schedule in those gym classes, PT session or weekend run. 
Staying active during the festivities will help keep your weight down. 
 
Eat before the party:
 
Turning up to your Christmas party hungry will result in you picking at the buffet table or consuming calorie laden party food. 
However, if you have a substantial dinner before hand, filled with veggies, you wont be hungry and are therefore less likely to snack. 
 
​Plate up right:
 
​As tempting as it is to fill your plate with delicious stuffing, pigs in blankets and mash potatoes, you will benefit and be grateful in the long-term if you fill half your plate with veggies, lean turkey meat and a small amount of luxurious foods. 
 
Little indulgences:
 
Just because you are following a healthy eating plan doesn't mean you can't indulge a little. If you love a certain type of food then have a small portion. However, if there is a dessert on the table that you know you don't absolutely love then pas on trying it- saving you calories. 
 
Mindful eating:
 
Christmas is a time for indulgent, rich food that you wouldn't normally eat throughout the year. Enjoy this food by savouring every bite. Take your time to taste the flavour and be aware of the delicious food you are eating. 
 
​Enjoy the non-food part of Christmas:
 
​Don't focus too heavily on the food aspect of Christmas. Many other aspects come with the joy of Christmas. This is usually a time when family and friends get together and enjoy the quality time spent together. Cherish these moments and enjoy the simplicity of life.
