Slimming in the real world
An invite for a night out needn’t ruin your weight loss…

In an ideal world, you would follow your weight loss plan to the letter, you’d never feel hungry, temptation simply wouldn’t arise and nobody would dream of asking you out for a meal or to attend a social occasion whilst you were trying to lose weight.

But this is the real world! And if you are going to lose weight in the real world, you have to have some strategies up your sleeve to cope with tricky situations – and accept that you probably won’t be perfect 100 per cent of the time.
Adopt the right attitude
If you have a social event coming up, the first thing to remember is that socialising is not just about food! It’s about having fun with friends and family. If you go with the attitude that, “this is going to spoil my weight loss anyway, so I might as well pig out” – that’s exactly what you’ll do!

But there is another way. Go with the intention of having healthier choices if they are available, but if not, decide just to have small portions of what is available. In the few days preceding the event, if you can save a few Checks from your Daily Checks Allowance, you can then include an indulgence or two without doing any serious damage to your weight loss. The important thing to remember is that if you approach a situation with a positive attitude, you are much more likely to have a positive outcome.

Best laid plans…
But what if it all does go pear-shaped? Perhaps you did eat too much at that social do, or perhaps you’ve had a few days when, for whatever reason, you’ve just gone off the rails. This is when you must accept that you are human – not superhuman. Nobody is perfect 100 per cent of the time. It simply isn’t going to happen and expecting perfection will only lead to disappointment.

The most important piece of advice you should act upon as far as weight loss is concerned, is don’t panic, forgive yourself, learn from your mistakes, pick yourself up and carry on as though nothing had happened. Don’t use imperfection as an excuse to give up!
Keep things in perspective
Think of the big picture. A blip on the scales is nothing when your intention is to get slim and stay slim permanently. Lighten up and smile a lot! It will put you in a much better frame of mind to carry on.
