Good for Guys
Eating a wide variety of foods from all the food groups is good for everyone but some foods have particular significance for men.

Lycopene is an antioxidant found in good amounts in tomatoes, and to a lesser extent in watermelon, guavas and pink grapefruit. Its antioxidant properties help prevent free radical damage to cells caused by everyday living, but of special interest to men is that research has shown that increased levels of lycopene in the body are associated with a decreased risk of prostate cancer.

Unlike most nutrients, lycopene becomes more available to the body when it is cooked, so tomato-based sauces, soups, tomato purée and even tomato ketchup are good ways of getting your lycopene.
Folate's not just for girls
Women who are planning a pregnancy are advised to eat a diet rich in folate, a B vitamin found in green leafy veg, peas, pulses, oranges and wholegrains as it reduces the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida in babies. Recent research also seems to indicate that men who have a high intake of folate produce healthier sperm with a lower incidence of abnormalities. So it looks like you should both be eating your greens if romance is on the cards!

Another good reason for eating folate is that it helps lower levels of homocycteine in the blood. High levels are associated with heart attacks.

Folate is the form of the vitamin found naturally in food. Folic acid is the synthetic (equally useful) form often used in supplements and fortified foods.
