I am inspired to start this thread after reading the 'Lost recipe' thread asking for an old SS favourite.

I love cook books and I must admit that I've paid over the odds on ebay for them at times when I've read threads about people's old favourites. I have a copy of each of the Pep plans since I started SS in 2004 and I have kept all of the SS books I have bought, along with lots of leaflets, booklets and, dare I say it, lots of recipe books and plans from the rivals....

My favourite-ever-books are:

  • SS Yellow cover Members' Favourites recipe book (which has little photos of the members that sent in the recipes!)
  • The SS blue/grey cover PEP book which was the last one with calorie values before they moved over to checks-only in 2005
  • The mini Asian Recipe book that we were given free at the Feb 07 Glasgow meet
  • The WW Switch comprehensive recipe book (from a charity shop) complete with calories values so I don't have to mess with points

What do you have and what are your fave recipes?

Filo pastry?
Speedy
You got it in ! Filo pastry, brush with oil and baked in the oven instead of frying.
Ok so from memory:-

Mashed potato, curry paste & prawns.

You can use peas(tho they have checks) instead of prawns, anything really. My family love them!

I have also added ( not old book tho) the breaded mushroms from the 5 check book to this.
Thought i might mix the breadcrumbs with some garlic salt! So making them garlic mushrooms.

Apologises Gin for going a wee bit OT, with the mushies not being from an "older" S.S book.

I've also got the Members Favourite Recipe Book and the WW Switch. The other WW book I really like is the Pure Points Recipe Book. I've got so many old SS cook books, I'll have to look them out and refresh my memory. One recipe I really liked was Paprika Chicken but I've lost the book that was in.

Hi, does anyone have the full samosa recipe from the 'Let's Celebrate' and check value/calories?

Also, is anyone able to scan the mini Asian recipe booklet at all and maybe attach it here at all to share? I love curries and spicy foods.

Hi

There is a "Spicy Prawn Samosas" recipe in the "Asian & Oriental" recipe book which I think might be the same???

Makes 18 - 2 checks / 0.5g fat per Samosa

225g / 8oz cooked peeled prawns, fresh or frozen (defrosted)
115g / 4oz mashed potato
2 dspn curry paste (eg Patak's Tikka Curry Paste)
2 dspn chopped corriander or parsley
3 x 45g sheets filo pastry (eg Jus-rol)
1 tbsp oil

Mix together the prawns, mashed potato, curry paste and herbs in a bowl. Cover and leaver 4 hours or overnight

Pre-heat oven to 200C / gas mark 6.

Lay out a sheet of clingfilm slightly larger than the filo sheets and lay the 3 sheets on top. Cut into 6, 1 cut lengthways and 3 crossways, so you now have 18 stips of filo in 3 layers of 6.

Take out 3 strips and cover the rest with clingfilm, so they do not dry out.

Brush each lightly with oil and put 1 dspn of the filling mixture at the bottom of each strip. Fold up in triangles, or make into parcels, sealing the edges with water. Brush lightly with oil and place on a non-stick baking tray.

Repeat until all the pastry and filling are used up and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.

I've got three little books that I love - Asian, British Classics and Mediterranean. Wouldn't part with them for the world, and nothing SS have done since has compared!
