Great post! Haven't had a look at the site for quite a while, but since I signed up to do the Edinburgh RFL, I have lost 4 pounds. Have been running/walking every second morning for two weeks (usually 4 or 5 miles). I try to run the flats and downhills, but walk the uphills. Cannot imagine ever being able to run UP a hill!! Never done RFL before, and hoping it's not too hilly

Good Morning all how are we today, just reporting i managed 2km(1.2 miles) in 23 minutes and 53 seconds. My aim now is to improve this
Katie - well done on the running/walking it will all come together and you will be able to run up hills in no time. Well done on your loss, keep up the good work

Hi guys
I used to run a lot before I got ill, thinking that I wanna start it again now that the nicer weather is here I
can get outside again!!
How do you guys find it helps with the weight loss?!
I used to really enjoy it and did a 10k which felt amazing
Lookin forward to getting back into it, altho not the first few weeks haha
hope your all doing well x

Katie, I know how you feel about hills.
theweebarrel, that's great.
Jenny, 8 miles seems such a long way! Well done!
Sue, I got down to 84 kilos when I was training for a 10K. It's not just the running but the feeling that you should eat well to fuel the running. I was diagnosed with asthma and I'm just getting back into it myself but I'm back down to 85.4 and I really struggled to lose weight until I could start exercising again.
I love being back at my old gym. It's so relaxed and although i was busy in reception, it's so big it didn't seem crowded (at the gym I've been going to recently it was a struggle to get a treadmill and to find somewhere to sit down while getting changed).
I really enjoyed my swim and the soak in the spa pool afterwards and my foot doesn't seem as stiff. My ears aren't very good though now but it should clear up soon and at least it will stop me overdoing things this week.
I am going to wait before running though. I don't want to start again too soon and when I do I'll try a full session of walking first.

Yeah I've got asthma too and it's really annoying as it's sport that really makes mine worse, but once you build up the fitness it's good for your lungs, just need to get past the first few runs haha!!
Need to get some new fitness gear, maybe try that tomorrow then get out and pound those pavements hehe
Happy running everyone x

I kept training to run as before then kept waking up in the middle of the night with an asthma attack. I started with walking for 20 - 30 min a day, inside with the Wii Fit if it rained and then I got EA Sports Active and the short bursts of running really suited me. Now I'm using the Walk / Run plan from The New Runner and the walking breaks really help as I have a chance to sort my breathing out.

Thats not good if your having nighttime attacks that means your asthma isn't controlled correctly
do you mind me asking what inhalers your on, dose and type etc,
My OH is a respiratory and asthma specialist, maybe he can advise you on if you need to change types of inhaler?
Feel free to private message me or ignore me haha

I had a great time at the gym today. It's always quiet when the swimming lessons are happening. I think when I was a member before I took it for granted. Now I intend to enjoy every minute.
My foot is much better although it hurts a little if I'm doing a lot of walking. I am trying to decide when the start the treadmill again although I only intend to walk the first week.
I've ordered a green ipod shuffle which will be great for running and with the offer from Audible only cost £8. I do have to keep the Audible subscription for a year but it's worth it.
What is everyone else doing?

hanging my head in shame as i haven't been running for a few days, i am so tired just now i dont have the energy, which is a vicious circle as you always feel more energetic after exercise.

I went to the gym today and walked for 30 min. It was really hard not to run. Both my feet are a little sore but that's because of the extra walking I did (the bus that goes all the way went straight past).

Managed to get a couple of runs in this week. Today was on the treadmill. I slowed it down a little but it meant I didn't have to adjust the speed and I did 25mins. Think I will build on this when I'm running on a treadmill and get my distances done and then try and reduce my times gradually. So whilst I feel slightly disappointed by my times, I think this is the only way I'll be able to build up to an hour running consistently (And then I'll see the benefits!)

How is everyone getting on? Now I'm on holiday I'm going to start running again. Not sure when as I've shopping to do and other stuff before the wedding. I'm not doing the Race for Life now - I decided that as I'v not run for so long it wouldn't be worth risking it. Better to start back slowly.

Hi
hope I can join in!! I'm from Glasgow but now live in Canada. I started running about 10 weeks ago. There is a great store over here called the "Running Room". The guy who started it- John Stanton- is such an inspiration as he was an over weight smoker who decided in his 30's to do a short race with his kids (I think it was about 2kms). After he puffed his way through that, he decided to get fit!! Running rooms are available all over Canada and they're so handy. The staff are helpful on the right kind of footwear, clothing (it gets to minus 40 here in the winter!!) and will help with injury prevention etc. One of the good things about living where I do, is that it's such a running culture. You feel safe when you run and there's no sarky comments! I NEVER ran in Glasgow but mainly because I thought I hated running!!
So now I run 3x10 minutes and walk for one in between. I have no idea how far I run but I estimate it's about 3-4km's. I want to buy a GPS next week and measure my distance. Hopefully, I won't be too disappointed!! My aim is to run 3 times a week and to build up to a 5km in about 30 minutes.

How is everyone getting on? I'm starting my half marathon training tomorrow but I'm going to walk. I'll try to squeeze in the odd bit of running even if it's just on EA Sports Active on crosstraining days.
I'm planning to walk outside this week unless the weather changes (Monday, Wednesday and long walk on Saturday) and then crosstraining on Thursday and Sunday (Sundays will be a gentle swim).
I also need to add some strength training twice a week which will be EA Sports Active exercises and maybe some callanetics.
What is everyone else planning for next week?

Bookhunter how great this thread has popped up in "newest posts " for me. At the right time too. I don't run but want to step up the exercise and begin my walking again.
But before I go Good luck for tomorrow with your training.
I plan to walk this week do some pilates (or at least begin to learn Pilates) and if weather is to bad Swim a couple of times.
So now off to read your thread in full.X

It's the Bradford City Run on October 17th. Good luck on the treadmill.
Speedy, welcome. I've always wondered about Pilates and it's mentioned as good for strength training so it might be good to try. I might rent the Pilates and Yoga Wii game.

I did my second walk today and I'm now weighing up the pros and cons of walking outside or at the gym. I don't like having to concentrate on outside things like crossing roads and looking out for uneven pavement but if I do go to the gym, I have to walk quite a way to the bus stop as the bus I catch to get there stops and I can't use my pass on the others.
Today I did better with my food but I was still really hungry after tea which wasn't good. I'm trying to eat more at breakfast but although today's bacon and potatoes seemed a lot, it was only about the same as cereal. I might try cutting back tomorrow and Friday when I'm not doing as much to make up for it.

There's a small green but the path doesn't go all the way round so in wet weather, there's not much space. I think it's 700m. The big park isn't safe. I'm going to get a bus somewhere for my long walks if the weather's nice. It will be difficult to resist stopping to eat on the way home though.
I love fried new potatoes. The minature ones are 2.5 checks for about 1/4 of a bag from M & S. The ones I had yesterday were 7 for 250g and it did for breakfast and lunch. They brown very nicely in spray oil too.

Just been looking at buses and I can use my bus pass on the Sunday buses to and from the gym which is great and there's a weekday one at 19:50 which I could get if I don't want to walk. This will be useful when I get to the really long walks. I might pay to get the other buses sometimes too. I was thinking of changing my bus pass but it's £110 more so I think I'll stick to the one I have.
Really looking forward to tomorrow. It's only 3.2km but it's a start.
