Well as much as I don't really like exercise that much.. Well, actually that isn't quite accurate. When I'm doing any form of exercise whether it be running, walking, gym or classes.. I enjoy it when I'm there and do feel good afterward.. It's getting me there in the first place!
I have ran a few times over the past 2/3 weeks but not as much as I should have with the ice/snow etc.. The treadmill bores me and makes me very nervous about what I have ahead of me.. Outdoor running doesn't make me feel that way so I enjoy that far more.. Esp since I got my new Garmin!
I think the key for me is to have a timetable so I can make 'appointments' for the gym/going out a run and not just wake up and think 'right, what will I do today?' because that question often leads to Jeremy Kyle and a duvet after the school run!!!!!
Gy,m timetable isn't out yet but comes out Friday so will grab one then and plan ahead!!

I am just goin to try my best to get to at least 6 fitness classes per week - trying to go mon - fri each week so long as I have nothing else like working evenings etc.
I am quite happy to stick with this at the present but once I get a few more stone off I wouldn't mind trying to run a 5k but at the moment I am carrying too much excess weight and find running can be a bit painful with my wobbly bits wobbling like jelly
Anita
Dec 29 2010, 11:19 AM
If you can do 6 fitness classes a week you could run a 10k, nevermind a 5k. I felt the same way this time last year and ran 2 10k's this year with no where near as much training as 6 classes per week, 2 if i was lucky! I waited til I had lost 5 stone before i got into exercise but my body would have adjusted much better to the weight loss if the exercise had been consistent. You can do it Claire! x

I read the forum this morning and it inspired me to head out for a 25 min road run. Feeling great and going shopping with that little bit more confidence. I love the inspiration you guys pass on! Its great to see others getting into exercise, i find at my classes people are more focused on solely the food intake but I think its exercise that makes you feel like a new person! x

I still struggle with my classes I think I'd need to get back into my routine properly to even attempt it!! i lost 1 stone then got into exercise but just feel with running I defo need to loose another few at least before I'd feel comfortable - my wobbly bits tend to start hurting me if I run too much

Thanks Anita I'll defo keep that in mind!
I'm glad you just brought up the whole skin thing as this has been in my mind for a little while...
In total to get from where I started to getting to my target will need to loose almost 8st.
With some of you ladies who have got to target or are getting closer to their target have you felt that all the excercise has helped with your skin keep a normal shape?? I am hoping the likes of pump etc will work but it still sits in the back of my mind that gaining so much weight will have totally ruined it.

To be honest Claire, its my arms that show the signs and my stomach but i think weights would go a long way in sorting that out. I also think i will talk to my doctor about it and see if they can help in anyway. I also welcome any advice from other people who have lost lots of weight x

Dec 31 2010, 03:27 PM
Hi Claire. I lost a couple of stone and exercised the whole way through which resulted in my losing over 30 inches all over my body - and 9 inches off my waist alone! I've got a bit of the bingo wings happening but like Anita says, weights would probably firm those up some - push ups are a really good exercise for toning the upper body I find.
My problem area is my stomach and although it has gotten flatter, it will never be truly flat and I have flab still but the skin has tightened up some. As soon as I put on a few lbs, it shows up there unfortunately. The rest of my skin has firmed up quite nicely - I personally also think drinking a lot of water helps with your skin and it's elasticity. I do love my water.
Very good Anita! I wasn't able to get to the gym today but will go on a nice New Year's Day walk to clear the cobwebs

This is the first time I have "dipped a toe" into this thread
and need some advice from all you exercise "experts"
Got a letter today from the "Country Club" that I joined last year, it's where I go swimming, they are going to be starting exercise classes on 10th January, it will cost me £2.50 per class, is that reasonable?
Anyway, I have counted out that it will cost me £10 a week to go to the ones I quite fancy having a go at
Monday mornings - studio circuits - I quote "a stationed exercise class, using an assortment of equipment to burn fat and tone the whole body. Suitable for all fitness levels.
Monday evening - Yogalaties - "a combination of studio yoga and Pilates for the complete beginner". Do you think I would be fit enough to do the two classes on the same day?
Tuesday mornings - Tums, Hips & Wobbly Bits of which, I have many
"A fun class that targets the problem areas, containing fat burning and toning exercises, no co-ordination needed. Suitable for Beginners.
Wednesdays have Studio Circuits in the mornings and Tums, Hips & Wobbly Bits at night, so I'll choose which one for this day, then Thursday and Friday I could swim??
This sounds like a plan?? as I said before I'm a woman "on a mission"
Bookhunter
Dec 31 2010, 07:23 PM
Audrey, that sounds great and although 2 of the classes are on Monday, they use different muscles. Maybe you could have Tuesday as a Rest day and do the Tums one on Wednesday for variety? You could add the other classes later once you've had time to adjust.
I am trying to get back into the routine of exercising but I'm taking it slowly because of my arm. I think on the days I can't fit it in or I'm too tired I will have a quick walk round town. My rest days are Tuesday and Friday.
I'll probably just do EA Sports Active 2 over the weekend. I've worked out how to remove exercise so as well as the core exercises I can't do (you have to balance on one arm), I'll remove most of the resistance band ones too and do the physio ones instead.
I find the resistance band exercises are great for shaping my arms. I really hate weights.
I take vitamins which have starfower and primrose oil which is great for skin (especially if your diet is low fat) and I always add baby oil to the bath.

Audrey, the classes look good. I would also suggest alternating each day with different classes using different muscle groups. As for doing two classes in one day - try it but the most important thing is to listen to your body and work at your own pace.
If you are tired after one class, then wait until the next day or give yourself a day's rest in between, see how you get on and don't overdo it at the beginning if you don't exercise on a regular basis now (sorry, not sure if you do or not), ease yourself into your new mission so you don't get an injury or get bored with it!!
I think £2.50 per class is very reasonable as before I joined Glasgow Club I was paying £4.15 per class there!!

Hello everyone - and Happy New Year!
OK, confession time - I have over 5 stones to lose and have never exercised in my life!
However, with the help of Scottish Slimmers, 2011 is going to be my year!!!!
Having had nearly 45 years of slobbiness, I definitely need some help to tone up.
My pledge for 2011 is to walk my dogs for an hour a day at least five days a week and as soon as our local leisure centre is open again, I'm signing up for two swimming sessions a week.
As my confidence and fitness levels improve, I'll add more excersise.
Talking about the whole skin issue - would using lotions such as Nivea Q10 from the start of an exercise plan be a good idea? I think they're supposed to help.
Good luck to everyone!

I had a lot of hassle with my gym membership and as an apology they offered me free personal training sessions, which is exactly what i need after xmas! I went for a personal training session today to start my training towards a half marathon. She told me i need to do cardio 5 days per week, including a road run. The 30 min run she did with me nearly killed me! I have no doubts that i will see results. I have another session booked in with her tomorrow.
The only problem is she said with this amount of training i will gain muscle instead of fat (which she says is heavier) and will therefore not lose weight despite a calorie controlled diet, however will look slimmer, leaner and more toned. Any words of wisdom? I want to get to target after all the hard work but i really want the achievement of a half marathon. As much as i never thought i would be in a dilemma like this 7 stone ago....all help or advice is welcome x x

Lovely to see a few new folk on this thread- hopefully it will be more than just a few of us this year.
Anita mmmm not sure what to say except I managed to get to target as did Miss Broxi and we both exercised in the gym almost everyday. Make sure your programme isn't loaded with weights and do plenty of cardio.
I am not a big fan of gym sessions I need the instructor screaming at me to keep me motivated.
If you can speak to your Doctor about it.
Tricia- please don't feel that gyms are full of skinny folk, I am at Bannytynes and that was always my big fear when I started- however their were plenty the same size/bigger than me and nobody bothered, I soon felt comfortable at the classes and the instructors there are great and really helpful whether you be in a class or doing a plan in the gym.
Circuits was great this morning and I can honestly say except the muscles in my back I actually feel good.
Will post my exercise plan for the week later as I am off to check out the new timetable- great excitment this week as it's all the new release of the classes so want to get in as many as possible before I go back to work on the 10th.
Catch you all later.

Jan 4 2011, 08:30 AM
Hi Anita! From what I have read, that's true - when you are training for a marathon most people don't have the weight drop off them (too bad as that would be ideal

). I think this is due to making sure you eat enough calories to sustain your energy levels for all your training, so basically everything evens out - calories in v calories out. Running a half marathon is a huge achievement as is losing 7 stone!!

I can see where you are coming from though.
You will definitely look leaner and more toned from your training and that is fab! Sometimes that makes more of a difference than losing actual pounds because your body gets more shape and definition and your clothes will fit better - it will be lean muscle.
How far away from your target are you?
I've always found it hard to find that happy medium with following the PEP, losing weight and exercising and if truth be told, when I was following PEP properly upon getting to target I was doing a lot of exercise and training and I would always lose half a pound every week - my old faithful as I would call it. If I had a week where I did less exercise, I would have a large loss. I'm still baffled by that... Although my losses were slow I wouldn't have given up the exercise because I did lose lots of inches and I built lean muscle and that made more of an impact on my shape than losing a couple of pounds did x

Well done on the walk Tutti!! A few more of those and you won't feel so puffed out. I used to feel quite intimidated by people at the gym but most folk feel the same way and are too worried about themselves to even notice others. Except for the posers but I just ignore them - they are too into themselves anyways

Once you go a few times you will feel more comfortable

I agree with the girls.....dont be put off. I joined the gym when I was a size 24 (I remember the trauma buying gym clothes) but I took a deep breath and remembered why I was doing it.
I am a humbled to say that "the posers" as I perceived them have become some of my good friends, they are lovely girls and a great support and source of encouragement to me. Whilst I worried about them judging me - I did exactly the same to them and had them labelled before I even got to know them
Everyone is there for their own reasons and has their own issues but these were the very girls who gave me the confidence to step up from low impact like Pump and Toning to higher cardio classes like Attack and Spin AND the very girls who gave me cards and flowers when I reached target
So I guess what I am saying is go and enjoy exercise, find what suits you, what you enjoy and do it for you....but just bear in mind, we can be as guilty as anyone of judging a book by its cover
My week looks like this -
Sat - New Years Day - nothing
Sun - 15k Cycle
Mon - Attack
Tue- Toning & Circuits
Wed - Pump
Thu - Attack
Fri - Spin

I agree, it is easy to judge folk - I was joking about the 'posers' as many folk talks/worries about them when going to the gym but these things never come across the right way when typing them, do they?? There
are lots of lovely folk at the gym. My apologies!
