A family holiday to Florida two years ago was the final straw for teacher Caroline Cane when it came to her weight. ‘When we got back and I looked at our family holiday pictures I was dismayed, I couldn’t believe it was me. I turned to my husband and said I look like one of these big, unhealthy, overweight Americans!’ ‘I spent the entire holiday in shorts that were too tight, changing my tops every day and feeling fat. I didn’t own a dress at that time,’ says Caroline. ‘I knew I was overweight and I suppose looking back I kind of knew I was ready to do something about it, it was the last holiday I was going to go on feeling bad so I ate absolutely what I wanted.’ Now almost 4 stone lighter it’s hard to believe this yummy mummy is the same person. ‘My whole life is better, I have more energy, I sleep better, I eat better, I can play with my children, I feel fit, I feel more confident and I am 100% happier with my body,’ says primary school teacher Caroline. ‘My weight has been a problem since I was a teenager, I was always the heavier one of my friends and always felt very uncomfortable. I was always on a diet, trying out some new fad so it certainly wasn’t for lack of trying that I was still overweight. From diets, pills, shakes and even juicing I’ve given everything a go but nothing seemed to shift the weight. ‘But I think the big difference this time is I’ve not just lost weight and changed my body for the better but my mind set is different too. I don’t think of it as a diet, because you can’t sustain a ‘diet’ for the rest of your life, but you can maintain healthy choices and that is exactly what Scottish Slimmers teaches you.’ Caroline credits her husband Billy most of all for his support throughout her life changing journey. ‘My biggest challenge was worrying I wouldn’t have time to exercise or prepare recipes, but my husband and I took turns cooking and preparing meals and the great thing about the recipes is they suit all the family. As well as Billy our two children eat the same as us so we are all eating healthier, more varied food.’ Looking back Caroline admits being pregnant and having two children, she used it as an excuse to eat as much as she wanted without doing any exercise. After the birth of her second child Carmen, Caroline suffered from post natal depression and she knew her weight had a part to play. ‘I wasn’t happy with my weight for years but because I was married I used to think it didn’t matter. When the post natal depression hit it was another wake up call to do something about my size. ‘Coming back from the family holiday I knew it was time to lose weight for myself and only myself. I wanted to look good, I wanted to feel healthy and be able to be active with my children. I am so happy I have achieved it and I feel like a whole new person. ‘Friends, family and colleagues all ask me questions about the secret of my success. ‘I simply tell them I make good choices, and the best choice I’ve made is joining Scottish Slimmers.’
