All about you

Simple self-care tips

Sometimes, it is all about You.

Smile bg

Research has shown that looking after yourself and, sometimes, putting your own needs first is surefire way to a happier, healthier life... and a slimmer one too.

First, don't expect yourself to be perfect, that’s a sure way to hit a downward spiral.

Secondly, be as kind to yourself as you would your best friend, accept the days that don't go exactly to plan, forgive any slips, and start again tomorrow.

And lastly, don’t put yourself down, not even thinking badly of yourself. Believe you can do this and you're half way there!

Scottish Slimmers' focus on healthier eating habits is designed to help you make changes that will last a lifetime, but it's also about the day-to-day thoughts and actions that make you feel good.

If you're not sure where to start, we pulled together a few of our top self-care tips that can easily slide into your routines:

Switch off for 30 mins

Every day, make a point of unplugging your devices, just for a short time. Switch off, literally, and enjoy the calm (really, no Facebook, Insta or Snapchat!). Research tells us that reducing screen time before bed promotes a restful, restorative sleep.

Sit down and eat

Savouring your food is a lost art for many. Dedicate time for at least one meal each day where you simply sit and eat. No phones, no television and no work, simply take the time to enjoy your food in a mindful way.

Organise your space

Declutter your space and you'll declutter your mind. This could be at work or your favourite space at home. Create a more relaxing, happy space by clearing or binning the clutter. ridding your life of anything you don't need.

Laugh out loud

Laughter is the best form of medicine, laughing with friends, family or co-workers can give you the endorphin boost your body is looking for.

Stretch it out

Take a breath, release any tensions you're carrying and have a stretch. After four or five days of simply stretching every morning and evening before bed, you will feel the benefits.

Go out for a walk

Another great way to release endorphins is to exercise, just going for a 20 minute walk every day will help you feel fitter and more energised, focused and optimistic.

Yessir, you can boogie

Put a spring in your step with an upbeat playlist. If you haven't already, get youself over to a music streaming service (Spotify has a free version) and find the music that makes you move. After only 10 minutes of toe tapping or kitchen disco, you'll feel upbeat and ready for anything.

Have a home spa day

When money or time is tight, a home spa day can be just as effective as an expensive salon or hotel spa. Run a bath with Epsom salts or lucious bubble bath, pop on a face-mask and indulge in a long, relaxing soak. Keep the lights low, close your eyes and focus on your breathing for a mindful moment of bliss.

Reboot and reset

We're all different and the best self-care for you is something that gives you joy. Whether that's watching a movie, having a Zoom party with faraway friends or going for a hike in the hills, make sure you take the time to do something you love, at least once a week!

You are on a life changing journey, it won't happen overnight, but dedicating time each week to reflect, relax and recognise each small step towards your Target will reinforce your wellbeing.

If there’s something you don’t like about your body right now, then take pride that you are doing something about it. One day you will look in a mirror and see that your effort was worthwhile... that's a promise!
